A Dream of Appalachia
Sweet Cedar Pines far away Misty Hills covered in green
Why is it that you always Keep returning to my dreams?
A bumpy road leads up the hills Verdant and cool in the sweaty South
Ice Tea from the fridge, sweet as candy Beef Jerky left to dry in the Sun
Roughshod fencing outside her house On a day grey like an old movie
I try to catch a peep in But the path leads me away in misery
I die in grief, but my soul, rising up Catches a glimpse of nature's perfection
Her straight hair, a blend of strawberry and orange Her skin, White as snow in complexion
She danced alone in the quiet holler Surrounded by Pines and Oaks, no more
Her face, round as the moon Her smile, subtle and blissful
Her face crawling with dirty freckles, Her eyes beads of Lapis hue
Not a shred of cotton to cover herself Nor a single owl to hoot
Her pose relaxed and calm, For she'd chosen a hermits pursuit
Her moves awkward and slow Her singing voice soothingly deep
She sang with a twang so twisted That was half the music to me
She ran away from Middlesboro Back to Cotton County, Kentucky
That dusty old Supermarket Couldn't contain her soul, so free
