Is this normal? Am I overreacting? Unnecessary arguments.

I keep finding myself in the same arguments with my husband over things that, in my mind, shouldn’t even turn into arguments. They feel like simple moments that could be handled with basic communication and respect, and then we could just move on.

For example, tonight: my husband was upstairs getting the kids ready for bed. When he came down, I was washing the dishes. Our usual routine is that I cook dinner, prep lunches, and get everything ready for the next day. His part is washing the dishes and cleaning the coffee machine at night.

Last night he didn’t do it, and the morning was chaotic. Things I needed for breakfast and to finish the lunches weren’t washed, and the coffee machine wasn’t cleaned either. I had to deal with all of that while rushing to get the kids out the door for school. Starting the day like that really stresses me out. I like the kitchen reset and ready for the morning.

So tonight, when he asked why I was doing the dishes, I calmly said, “I just want to make sure we get this done because this morning I was running late and it stressed me out.”

He immediately got defensive “Oh my God,” “You always need to complain,” etc. I stayed calm and said, “This doesn’t need to be an argument. It could just be a simple ‘I’m sorry about that’ and we move on.” But he kept going…saying he didn’t complain when I left something in the sink, that he was tired after work, and other comments about me.

From my perspective, if he was tired, that’s fine. Just say, “Yeah, I was exhausted last night. I’m sorry.” That’s it. Accountability, quick acknowledgment, and move forward.

Instead, he told me I “always want people to kiss my feet.” I tried to explain that I don’t want praise.. I just want communication, accountability, and basic respect. But it escalated because he kept making defensive comments and turning it back on me.

I’m honestly wondering:

Is this normal? Am I missing something?

What frustrates me most is that so many of our arguments aren’t about the task itself, they’re about communication and accountability. I feel like I’m asking for something pretty simple, but it turns into me being labeled as critical or complaining.

Sometimes I get so irritated in these moments that I think, “I don’t want to keep doing this.” We’re grown adults. I don’t want to keep having circular arguments where my point isn’t even acknowledged.

Am I looking at this wrong? Is this just normal marriage stuff? Or is there something bigger I’m not seeing?

TL;DR:

Husband skipped his usual chore, morning was chaotic. I brought it up calmly, he got defensive. I just want accountability — am I overreacting?
