Fact: The Project is Really, Really Big.
I asked Claude for help doing some math about the Space Elevator to find out how big it actually is. Here's my whole conversation. Some key takeaways:
- The project is a bit more than twice the diameter of the Earth.
- Those trams moving around the edge are traveling at about 34.4 million km/h, which is roughly Mach 28,000 or 3% the speed of light.
- The project is about 36% the mass of the moon.
That big mass number I asked about at the beginning of my chat with Claude is based on 250 Saturn V rockets because I hadn't thought of using arc yet and picked something essentially arbitrary to base an estimate on.
