Need advice on 3rd person vs. 2nd person perspective.

Writing help/Beta

Issue is summarized in the title, but yea. I’m writing a work with a prologue chapter. The rest of the fic is 100% in 3rd person perspective, but the way I’m writing the prologue opens up an option for that chapter alone to be in the 2nd person. I have a few questions to ask in order to figure out what path I want to take with it.

To provide more context, this choice is mainly based around engaging the reader with an enticing hook. The hypothetical character is purposefully faceless with minimal traits and inferences as to their character and their past, and they do not showcase any verbal interactions whatsoever. It’s a heavily action-driven prologue focused around environmental setup, foreshadowing, and building up to a cliffhanger that sets the tone of the fic going forward. That being said, here are my asks:

  1. Do readers find themselves engaging with 2nd or 3rd person perspectives more meaningfully?

  2. Does placing a reader more directly into a work deter them from continuing if/when their role in the story is taken away?

  3. What are your pros and cons of reading a work with either or both?

  4. Does either form of writing cause a tonal shift?

  5. Do readers find unsettling or oppressive settings more dire when they’re read about in 2nd or 3rd person perspective?

I’d be willing to answer more specific questions in the replies if needed. Thanks in advance ^_^
