Need Guidance please!

Ask Indian Muslims

I am from a Telugu-speaking state, currently living in New York. I am a 26-year-old male working as a software engineer at a tech company. While I don’t consider myself a 'perfect' practicing Muslim, I firmly believe in Allah and no other deity. I have fasted every Ramadan for the last eight years and have consistently paid Zakat since I started earning.

I have a best friend who became my partner a few months ago; we originally connected on Instagram through a mutual friend. She is a wonderful, kind person who loves me dearly. Since she is also Muslim, I thought our path to marriage would be straightforward, but I have encountered hurdles at every step.

First, there were career challenges. She is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in dentistry, which she won’t complete until 2028. We compromised on this, agreeing to a long-distance marriage until she finishes, with plans to relocate later to a city where we both have career opportunities. We also reached compromises on several personal matters.

However, I recently discovered that she and her family believe in Sai Baba as strongly as they believe in Allah. Her family visits Shirdi every year, and while she isn't as 'regular' in the practice, her belief remains firm. Initially, I tried to be okay with it, but I eventually realized I am very uncomfortable. I confronted her about my concerns and told her I would support her in eventually moving away from that belief at her own pace. Today, she told me she cannot do that because she wants to follow both in her life.

I don’t know how to handle this. I genuinely love her, but I view this as Shirk. I am concerned about our future. Even though she says she doesn't practice these beliefs actively at home and keeps them in her mind, I am struggling. I am looking for a middle ground or guidance from those with religious expertise.
