Am I weird for wanting to be friends with my (academic) rival?

This is a burner account.

I, (17M), attend a boarding school where they allow us to live on-campus. This will be important later.

I have an academic rival (17F) who I’ve been competing against since I was 14. We are constantly at each other's throats and get on each other's nerves. One of our teachers had decided to pair us up for a project because we were always fighting. It was that bad.

Throughout the project, I started to notice the little things about her. How she always seemed to brighten up the room a little bit, how she made noise in quiet environments, how it was always easy to find her in a bustling room.

It all really started when we started sneaking out of the dorms at night to convene in the common area to work on our projects. I guess it really started with a game of 21 questions.

I began to learn more about her, and then my curiosity peaked. We became closer. I wouldn’t say close enough to not be rivals, I mean we still compete against each other in everything we do.

But we had one moment, one night, where I was sitting on the couch with her legs draped over mine, and we spoke about how we first became academic rivals.

I asked her what she saw me as, and she said my last name, her rival. (We exclusively refer to each other by our last names, it’s not a boarding school thing, it’s just an us thing, she comes from an impressive family, I didn't want to be rude.)

The thing is, I was really hoping that she’d see me as my name, because I had already begun to see her as hers. I think I want to be friends with her, but I don’t know if it’s weird because we’ve been rivals for so long.
