My dad finally retired, and I realized how much he’s been pushing through the pain

My dad finally hung up his boots last month after 35 years in a government job. We had a small party at home, and honestly, seeing him relaxed for the first time in my life was such a vibe. But once the excitement settled, I noticed he was still limping a bit whenever he walked to the kitchen.

He’s always been that typical "I’m fine" Indian dad who refuses to see a doctor unless a bone is literally sticking out. He’s been complaining about "burning feet" and knee stiffness for years, but he just rubs some Zandu Balm and calls it a day.

Since I got my first big bonus, I decided to do a "Retirement Starter Pack" for him. I got him a nice Titan automatic watch he’s wanted forever, a Sennheiser pair of headphones so he can listen to his old ghazals without my mom scolding him, and a high-quality Yogarise mat because he wants to start doing some Pranayamas.

The main thing I did, though, was fix his walking situation. I noticed his old Skechers were completely flat inside. I bought him those Frido arch support insoles and literally had to force him to put them in. He was like, "Why are you wasting money on these small things?"

Fast forward to a week later, and this man is literally roaming around the colony for two hours every morning. He told me yesterday that his heels don't "sting" anymore when he stands up after a nap. It’s such a small thing, but seeing him actually enjoy his walks instead of dragging his feet is a huge relief.

It’s weird how we focus on the big gifts, but sometimes it’s the small boring stuff that actually improves their daily life. Now he’s obsessed with his step count on his phone and keeps showing it to me like a trophy.
