Understanding sexual hesitation in a Muslim partner (stress, religion, or inexperience?)
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some honest perspective and advice.
I’m an Asian woman currently in a relationship with a Pakistani Muslim man I met through a dating app in Europe. We’re both in our 30s. He studied in Pakistan and later completed his PhD in Europe, and he works in a fairly stressful industry.
I care about him deeply and genuinely love him. Our emotional connection is strong and stable. However, we’ve been facing some difficulties around physical intimacy, and I’m trying to understand the possible reasons with sensitivity to cultural and religious context.
He seems to have erectile dysfunction and also finishes very quickly. He appears to have very little sexual experience overall. He rarely masturbates (at least from what I can tell) and seems somewhat uncomfortable with penetrative sex. Even with just kissing or light physical intimacy, he sometimes says he gets “blue balls,” but still seems hesitant about moving further physically.
From my side, I don’t judge him and I don’t see this as a deal-breaker. I actually want to have a sexual relationship with him because I care about him and feel close to him. But I’m wondering whether his hesitation or difficulties could be related to religious background, internalized beliefs about sex, lack of experience, stress, or something else.
For context:
He is not extremely strict in daily life, but he is still observant in some ways. He prays about two to three times a day, only eats halal food, observes Ramadan, and does not drink or smoke. He met me on a dating app knowing that I am not Muslim, and physical affection like kissing has developed naturally between us.
I’m culturally Asian and was baptized Christian, though I’ve been non-religious for a long time. He doesn’t know much about my religious background.
As far as I know, his past relationship experience was very limited (possibly just one short relationship).
He doesn’t openly discuss sex much and seems shy or inexperienced rather than uninterested.
I’m not trying to stereotype Muslim men at all — I know everyone is different. I’m simply curious whether anyone has seen similar patterns or has insight into how religious upbringing, sexual guilt, or lack of experience might affect intimacy in Muslim men, especially those raised in more conservative societies but now living in Europe.
If anyone has personal experience (from either side) or thoughtful perspective, I’d really appreciate hearing it. I care about him and want to approach this with understanding rather than pressure.
I sincerely hope to build a future and marriage with him. That’s why I want to understand him more deeply rather than misinterpret or pressure him.
Thank you.
