DRIVER AT FAULT EXPIRED INSURANCE

Hi Everyone,

My husband was involved in a collision around 6:35 AM this morning here in Alberta. Another driver hit him, and when we exchanged information, we found out that their insurance had already expired.

We reported the incident to the police by phone about an hour after it happened. The driver initially said he would provide updated insurance information, but we haven’t heard from him since.

We have a few questions:

1.	What usually happens to a driver in Alberta who is caught driving with expired insurance?

2.	Can their license be suspended for this?

3.	Since we reported it to the police, can we still claim repairs through our own insurance even if the other driver’s insurance is expired?

We just want to understand what to expect next and what steps we should take to protect ourselves. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
