Backwards Compatibility

Hello PS3 enthusiasts. I have somewhat of a silly question, do I need to be signed into PSN to play PS2 games? It seems that it only recognizes PS2 and PS1 games when I’m signed into PSN, which is a pain now since you need to confirm via the PSN App and whatnot. Is this the case or am I missing something?
