Changing terms lost me almost half a year of 1Password at the old price - "we're unable to revert the pricing for you"

Discussion

Hey!

I've been a 1Password customer for about 5 years now on an annual individual plan with a 50% student discount.

My current subscription was already paid for a year, through July 15, 2026.

After the recent price increase announcement, I logged in to see what the new monthly cost would be since the email didn't mention anything about monthly billing. I switched the billing frequency to monthly just to check and that's where things broke.

Here's what happened to me.

I had already paid for 1Password personalplan until July 15, 2026.

1Password (Annual) for 1 user :: €31.80
July 15, 2025 to July 15, 2026
Subtotal €31.80
Discount (50%) -€15.90
Tax €4.05
Total €19.95 (paid)

Then on Feb 25, 2026, when I switched to monthly to check its price it generated an invoice and moved my next billing date up from July 2026 almost 5 months to March 25, 2026:

Prorated plan switch from 1Password (Annual) :: -€6.12
February 25, 2026 to July 15, 2026

1Password (Monthly) for 1 user :: €4.39
February 25, 2026 to March 25, 2026

Subtotal -€1.73
Discount (50%) -€2.20
Tax -€1.00
Total -€4.93
Applied Balance €4.93
Paid €0.00

Then after checking I switched back to annual thinking it would fix itself, it generated yet another invoice:

Prorated plan switch from 1Password (Monthly) on Feb 25 :: -€2.19
February 25, 2026 to March 25, 2026

1Password (Annual) for 1 user :: €43.80
February 25, 2026 to February 25, 2027

Subtotal €41.61
Discount (50%) -€21.90
Tax €5.03
Total €24.74
Applied balance -€4.93
Paid €0.00

Then 1Password tried to charge my card on file for the remaining sum (about 24 euros, iirc) but failed since I have disabled online payments on my card.

Now I have a partially unpaid invoice from 25 February, 2026 and soon 1Password will probably freeze my account due to an unpaid bill locking me out of accounts that exclusively use passkeys, even though I had paid for the service until July 15, 2026.

All this is because their initial email about the price 'update': 1) did not disclose a monthly price, and their email did not have a VAT inclusive price which is common in Europe; 2) their email specifically said:

How come my at least the annual subscription in my case was already at a new price? This makes no sense and is completely contradictory to what their email claimed. How am I supposed to know what they count as renewal and what they count as a 'new subscription'? I was only switching terms, not thinking it would reset my entire subscription at the very second.

I contacted support thinking remediating this issue would be a no-brainer, since I had been a customer for over 5 years. I was wrong. This is the response I got from their support.

This is again contradictory and very confusing. I do not remember seeing a new price presented to me, at least if they did it was not clear to me at that moment that I would lose the time I had already paid for. Not to mention that they completely failed to accomodate just because their initial communication was messy.

I wasn’t trying to renew early. I just wanted to see what the new monthly pricing would be. I don’t understand how changing billing frequency voids months I already paid for. Even if they prorate months but then immediately apply the price increases, I think this is not a good practice.

I'm sorry to say this out loud, since I've loved using 1Password all these years: this experience has made me look at your service in a completely different light. I feel really bad by what happened, what the response was. This didn't help me at all to use 1Password in the future, since I was already considering my options after the announced 37% price increase (in my case, incl. taxes).

Has anyone else experienced this? Were you able to get them to restore your original paid term? At minimum I would expect my access to remain valid until July 15, 2026 like it originally was...

I'm still waiting on 1Password to reply to my second email but I thought I'd post my experience here, just in case.

Because this is not okay.
