Why is everyone suddenly saying "singular" and using it wrong??

I’ve always loved 'singular' as a kind of underground word for something truly exceptional or unique. But lately I'm hearing it everywhere, and I'm pretty sure it’s being treated as an inflated, fancy synonym for 'single.' If someone tells me they ate a 'singular' piece of cake, I’m expecting a life-changing dessert experience, not a headcount of their snack. Why add the extra syllable when 'single' already exists? 'Singular' is going to lose its singular meaning and it bums me out.
