Sad boomer at training event
I started working for a new organization a few months ago and have had to do some initial training seminars. This one boomer lady gave her spiel about her branch of the organization. More than anything it made me sad.
Direct quote "I want you to love your work here. I want you to pour everything you have into it. If you're anything like me, home sucks, work is where you find your joy"
It hut like a truck. Do people still live like thaf anymore? On the one hand it felt like propaganda. But on the other I felt so bad for this woman and how her generation has been brainwashed. I love spending time with my family and doing what I can for vacations/leisure. We only have one life to live and putting my soul into work does not sound appealing. Clock in, do the best you can, clock out, enjoy your life. It fucked with me a little bit. It's a foolish and devastating mindset imo
Editing to clarify because a lot of comments make excellent points:
I have had times in my life where home was terrible. Pouring myself into work made me feel worse because I isolated myself. Now, when I have hard times I try to shift my focus to my hobbies and my community, and that actually helps me. A company will replace me tomorrow, so why would I give them anymore than I owe? I also just thought this was off putting advice to give to a bunch of new hires at a training seminar. I do feel terrible for this woman and people in similar situations and hope they find some peace.
