Does all on-board Bluetooth always suck??

I've tried on-board Bluetooth on 3 different ASUS motherboards & several different Xbox controllers over the years.. always the same result..controller loses connection within 5 min.. everytime.

I either have to buy the Xbox dongle OR a $7 Bluetooth dongle & it works flawless for years, what's the deal here? Has anyone had good luck with on board Bluetooth? Am I doing something wrong here?
