How to console a friend who lost her job and home and partner all at the same time?
I have a friend that has been in a tumultuous relationship for years. She is 39; I’m 4 years older than her. She had a teenaged child (about 15) and a younger daughter in Kindergarten. The kindergartener is her current boyfriend’s child. They got pregnant with the Kinder about a month after hooking up, and have tried to make it work. He’s acted as a step father to the older child (bio dad is in & out of prison) and they have lived together the entirety of their relationship. He’s very hot and cold with her and abusive at times.
One day he says that he will marry her; next day he can’t stand her, her voice, or anything she says. Some of the things he says when he’s annoyed or mad are just cruel. Their sex life is non existent. He gets mad and tells her he hates her. Says he wants to break up. Shes never actually moved out & broken up with him- he just threatens it (it’s his house that he bought after they had their daughter) whenever she does something he doesn’t like, which is weekly.
Recently, her entire department got a notice that there will be a huge layoff in August. Everyone in her department is scrambling to figure out what to next. Interviews and going through all kinds of changes, especially because she works from home right now as a nurse who reads people’s charts and fin beds at hospitals, etc., which allows her to pick up & drop off her kids since she works from home.
He just told her tonight that he’s not in love with her and wants to be platonic while living in the same house (if she chooses). Clearly, she’s devastated. I feel like this is the worst time he can be doing this, and he didn’t just fall out of love with her today so how long has known this? And does he even mean it? Because he says a lot of things he backpedals on days or weeks later after he feels better by letting his frustrations out on her. Like he explodes, they don’t talk for a few days, and then he’s all nice and friendly again. She and I have both been in abusive relationships before. The cycle is literally exhausting to hear, I can’t imagine what it’s like for her to live it.
I don’t know what to say to her. She can’t afford to really live as a single mom on her salary and she doesn’t even know if she will have a job in August. She definitely wanted the family for her kids and now she’s losing that family into. I don’t know how to console her.
