New engine possibly burning oil

93 Toyota pickup, 4cly 2wd

had shop put in new engine. I got this done in one town and had to drive home 50 miles, mostly flat but maybe 20 miles of hills. changed oil at 500 miles as recommended. was told the break I'm period was over after this and could drive normal. checked my oil today and found it was on the low end. probably need half a quart. I can't remember how long it's been but probably got this engine 3500 to 5000 miles ago. is this normal?

also I know I shouldn't have driven it home but like I could stay in that town I had to go home and this shop was more affordable plus my family uses this mechanic so he's trusted.

I still had to drive the highway during the break I'm period. was pretty much forced to. but made sure to at least vary my speed on the highway. I would change to 4th or 5th gear and made sure to NOT drive a constant speed for too long and kept the rpms relatively low
