Following up on my post from last weekend, I finally got some time to sit down and watch Gamera 2: Attack of Legion and wow. You guys were not kidding about this movie being even better than Guardian of the Universe. I'll just go ahead and get straight into my thoughts.

To start, the incredible standard that Guardian of the Universe set for this franchise's visual effects was not only met, but completely exceeded. There were so many scenes where I was completely dumbfounded when I started to think about just how the hell they did that practically. The suit design for the big Legion and the creature design for the smaller Legion were both absolutely monstrous and delightful, but I think I may have to give it to the smaller Legion in terms of design.

This leads into another aspect I appreciated about the film, the borderline horror in certain scenes. There were a handful of scenes that had visual and sound design so gross that it made me physically cringe a bit, which is rare for me with a kaiju film. I found the scene of Gamera screaming while being smothered to death by the Legion to be especially horrific and most likely solidified it as my favorite scene of the movie. The scenes of the small Legion in the train tunnels were also stellar.

I actually really enjoyed how this film utilizes elements from the first film but was still able to stand on its own two legs. Bringing in past characters for small roles just to give the audience a bit of an insight into how their lives have been impacted by the events of the first movie, all while delivering a totally unique and fresh human drama with new characters makes this an extremely captivating sequel.

All in all, if the first film was about humanity being thrust into a new and confusingly scary world alongside Gamera, this film is about humanity learning to work alongside Gamera when the time arises. A solid 9/10 movie, and once again one of the best kaiju films ever made.
