Draft and free agency

Discuss

With the defense transitioning to a 3–4 scheme, I think the draft needs to be focused on defense again.

If I’m in Brandon Beane’s position, my focus shifts back to the defense. A system change alone requires personnel adjustments, but when you combine that with heavy defensive free agency losses and the long-proven reality that defense still wins championships, the priority becomes clear.

The offense has consistently produced close to 30 points per game regardless of turnover at wide receiver. With Josh Allen under center, Buffalo doesn’t need to force offensive upgrades early in the draft — they need a defense capable of closing playoff games.

Wide receiver can be addressed efficiently through free agency and mid-round selections. I’d specifically target Tyquan Thornton as a vertical speed threat and Jahan Dotson as a quick-separating Z receiver. Their contrasting skill sets add elements the offense lacked last season while creating more space for Shakir, Coleman, Cook, and Kincaid to operate underneath.

Free Agent Targets

•	Azeez Ojulari — OLB

•	David Ojabo — OLB

•	Isaiah Simmons — LB/S hybrid

•	Tyquan Thornton — WR

•	Jahan Dotson — WR

•	Teven Jenkins — G

•	Zion Johnson — G

Most of these free agents are players coming off rookie contracts who have flashed production but haven’t fully broken out due to injuries, scheme fit, or opportunity. That makes them ideal value signings — young, affordable, and still possessing upside.

The goal isn’t headline signings. It’s building depth and athletic versatility that fits the new defensive system while keeping the offense efficient and explosive.
