Broke a string tuning from B to C on my Bass VI

Just snapped the second string on my Fender Bass VI tuning up from B to C. Didn’t think a half step would be an issue, but even at B the tension felt pretty high.

Thinking about switching to a thinner gauge string to make it easier on tuning to C. Is that a bad idea? Any advice?
