I'm starting to hate my friend over an award
For context, I transferred to a new school two years ago, and I had a hard time making friends. I ended up making friends with a guy named June. Almost instantly, we clicked. We had the same interests, and we were on par with each other academically.
Eventually, everyone just started to see us as a package deal, two peas in a pod type of situation. But the more I got to know him, the more I realized he wasn't exactly a good person.
He's one of the most negative and manipulative people I've ever met, if I'm being honest. We started drifting apart after he admitted that he disliked me for things I can't control. I've never been able to fully stop being friends with him because it's hard for me to, considering that I've truly thought of him as a friend.
There was this national award that I wanted to qualify for, and our teacher was telling us how they're choosing between him and me to represent. They made us do an essay, and I was telling June how much I wanted the award. He was also telling me about how much he didn't want it nor was he interested, basically just talking shit about the school.
Then I found out yesterday he was chosen after our teacher told us. The teacher gave him a text (it had like an essay prompt) and June showed me and asked me if I would've been able to answer if I got chosen.
I'm so done with him honestly. I've tried to move past things he'd done and stuff he'd told me but this just crossed the line for me. I felt so betrayed, disappointed, and angry. He knew I wanted the award and he got it even though he told me he wasn't interested.
I shouldn't have believed him, yes, but it's like our friendship never mattered to him. I also can't even show how disappointed I am because that'd make him feel better about himself and I'd seem bitter about not getting the award. I hate that people would see him as this nice person when he really isn't.
