Everyone keeps talking about prompt engineering like it’s the new secret weapon. As if knowing the “right words” will suddenly unlock unlimited intelligence.

But after using AI tools for real work, I’ve realized something uncomfortable.

The prompt isn’t the problem. The thinking usually is.

You can watch all the prompt tutorials you want. You can save fancy templates and copy “expert-level” prompts. But if you don’t actually know what you’re trying to achieve, the output will always feel average.

AI doesn’t struggle with language. People struggle with clarity.

Most weak outputs come from vague intent. Someone asks the AI to “write something about marketing” and then gets disappointed with a generic response. But what else could the AI do? The question itself had no direction.

Prompt engineering feels powerful because it gives the illusion of control. It feels like a technical skill you can learn quickly. Thinking clearly, on the other hand, is slow and uncomfortable. It forces you to make decisions. It exposes gaps in understanding. So people avoid it.

What’s interesting is that AI doesn’t replace thinking at all. It amplifies it. If your thinking is shallow, AI will generate shallow answers faster. If your thinking is structured and intentional, AI suddenly feels impressive.

That’s why two people can use the same tool and get completely different results. One blames the AI. The other quietly uses it every day to save hours.

The people who get the most value from AI aren’t obsessed with prompts. They’re obsessed with framing the problem properly. They know what they want, what they don’t want, and how they’ll judge the result. The prompt is just a translation of that thinking.

Calling this “prompt engineering” makes it sound new and complex. But it’s really just clear communication and critical thinking using a new interface.

Those skills mattered before AI existed. They matter even more now.

So yeah — prompt engineering isn’t useless. But it’s definitely overrated. Good thinking has always been the real multiplier, and AI just makes that more obvious.

Curious how others see this. Do you think prompt engineering is its own skill, or just clear thinking with better tools?

Prompt engineering is overrated. Thinking is not.
