You can swap out any emotional reactions for other emotions
In a once-in-a-lifetime deal, you've been given the power to exchange any of your emotions for others. In so doing, you change that emotional reaction to trigger the new emotion instead of the body's default response. For instance, if you were to change "fear" to "happiness", you'd find yourself feeling pleasantly calm and cheerful when riding a rollercoaster or prepping for a big exam or work presentation. However, this change takes place across the board for every situation that triggers the emotion. For instance, in the previous example, you'd also find yourself feeling happy after getting in a car crash and might find yourself smiling and unconcerned while being robbed at gunpoint.
You have the flexibility and freedom to swap out as many of your emotions as you want, but choose wisely or face the unexpected consequences! This is a one-time opportunity, so all choices you make will continue forever, and you will not receive this deal again. However, you may at any point stop the deal and revert all or a subset of the choices you made back to normal (up to one time per swap, after which you continue with normal life).
Key points:
- An "emotion", broadly speaking, consists of the mental state of mind, feelings, and accompanying physical components one typically feels in different circumstances. Examples: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, despair, uncertainty, excitement, etc.
- Any swap you make swaps out both the mental and physical components of the emotion - if you are in a situation where you would normally feel fear (butterflies in stomach, dizzy, racing heart), and you've swapped it for happiness, you'll feel "happy" (including calm pulse, relaxed, pleasant joy, dilated pupils) in any situation you'd normally feel the former symptoms.
- You can make as broad or narrow of a swap as you want. For instance, you could swap out "fear" (broad), or you could only target anxiety/nervousness/stress/worry/terror/apprehension etc. Likewise, you could choose "happy" (typically a more relaxed, calm joy), or pick something more specific such as joy/euphoria/calm/pleased and so forth.
- If you like, you can also target primarily physical feelings such as pain or heat. This would be replaced as before, meaning if you replace "pain" with "euphoria", you'll feel amazing every time you get a migraine, but beware that you may become addicted to touching a hot stove!
What emotions do you swap out, if any? Do you attempt to make choices to last your whole life, or do you try out a few things knowing you have the one-time ability to revert them back if it doesn't work out?
Here's a couple I might try (spoiler marked in case you'd prefer to think of your own first):
!Change "anxiety" to "excitement". Hopefully, instead of being nervous about something stressful, or worried about an upcoming event, I'll instead be naturally reframing these as good things that I can do or experience.!<
!Change "jealousy" to "gratitude". Instead of craving experiences or things that someone has that I don't, I'll be happy - either for them and their experience with those things, or with me and the experiences I do have.!<
!Change "bored" to "content". This means that any time I'm bored (self explanatory), I'll not only feel "happy", but it'll be due to feeling fulfilled and satisfied to sit and exist without the need to consume social media or seek out entertainment nonstop.!<
