I prefer when customer service workers aren't overly friendly.

It honestly just makes me feel like an asshole when customer service workers are all smiley and enthusiastic and energetic and overly polite because I'm shy and softspoken and can never seem to match their energy. So they'll be all like "hiiiiii welcome how are you" :D

and I wasn't prepared to have a conversation, I was just prepared to place an order or pay for my items, so I'm just like 'uh fine 😕' and then when the transaction is over i always say "thank you" but because my voice is so soft by default I always worry they didn't hear me and sometimes I accidentally start turning to walk away too fast and say "thank you" as I'm heading out which makes it even harder to hear me. It also is extremely confusing to me when they say "thank you" to ME? YOU SERVED ME. WHY ARE YOU THANKING ME? IM THE ONLY ONE WHO SHOULD BE SAYING THANK YOU IN THIS CONTEXT. YOU SHOULD BE SAYING YOURE WELCOME, NOT THANK YOU!

Most recently, I walked into a store and the employee asked me "can I help you find anything" and I was exhausted so I just shook my head "no" and kept walking but I guess they didn't notice me shake my head no, because I heard them say "guess not" in the SLIGHTEST frustrated tone as if they thought I was another rude customer ignoring service workers they thought were beneath them or something.

Anyway, I went to this restaurant that FINALLY didn't have this etiquette. All the employees, were nice/polite, but not overly so, said "you're welcome" instead of "thank you" and weren't smiling and pretending they loved it there. They literally all just gave off the vibe that they didn't want to be there and were just there for a paycheck but they'd do their job to the best of the ability without any over the top performances anyway, and I loved it. I felt the most comfortable there then I had felt in a customer service setting in a very long time.
