Never financing a car again

Financial experiences

I was 24 (about to be 26 this year) started making some decent money and I needed car because I was moving from a big city to smaller city with a less efficient public transportation system . Also needed to move for work.

I decided to get a vehicle, I knew I wanted reliability over luxury so my options were the big 2 Honda or Toyota. Walked into a used car dealership, due to the fact I thought saving 5-10k to buy a car on fb marketplace or auto trader was too hard. And put 2500 down on a 2019 civic the an interest of 8.8% for 6 years with about 63000km on it. Monthly payment came up to 420 and since it was my first car insurance was a 385 ( it’s around 300 now)

At first I thought it was steal but I’ve come to realize it was dumb and I’m literally taking away from money I could be putting towards my “Fuck you money” account or towards saving for a house. I just had this realization the other day and I had such a sick feeling in my gut when it clicked. For a quick summary excluding gas and tires that car has cost me about $10k and it’s not been even up to 2 years. I’m not living paycheque to paycheque and yes I can comfortably afford it while also paying my other bills and sometimes put more money in it if I get a bonus or a tax refund and I have 3 months of my emergency fund saved but holy Christ was that a stupid decision.

And you wanna know the worst part. My job is a fly in fly out gig (mining industry) so I’m on a rotation of 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. So for half the year I don’t even drive the fucking thing
