Do electric guitars require amp?

I'm looking to buy an electric guitar but I m worried it won't sound good without an amplifier. Is it absolutely necessary to buy an amplifier? Will I be able to even play the guitar without an amplifier because electric guitars have smaller body and I'm worried it won't be loud enough.
