Bought the game today but it's unplayable?

After playing for a grand total of a few minutes, suddenly i wasn't able to close any menus using the escape key. If I tab in and out of the game, it will work for a short while before breaking again.

The only settings I've changed are a few key binds, but I am too frustrated with this issue to continue playing, has anyone encountered this issue and knows of a solution?
