apparently i "can't possibly be autistic" because "it would have been noticed earlier"

Misunderstanding/Misinformation

i am not sure if the flair is the best fitting one, but let's go with that one.

this happened a while ago, while i was still in high school, i was probably 16? i'm turning 22 in march for context so details may be spotty (surprisingly the guy with multiple disorders affecting memory has a bad memory /lh)

i had been reading about autism for a while and thought it fit my experience well, but i didn't know how to bring it up to my mom to maybe get a diagnosis (to this day because of how long the process would be i still am not diagnosed)

then one day she brought up how she read about misophonia and how me and my brother might have it since we're both sensitive to some sounds and i thoughy to myself "ah, maybe i should mention autism now" so i did!

and her answer was "no you can't be autistic, it would have been noticed before."

... some more info i randomly remember (or that i was told) about my childhood:

  • my grandma told me i used to ask her to "play the game with the letters on the computer!" microsoft word. i was talking about microsoft word. i would type letters and that counted as a game to me
  • i was never a social child but that could be explained by shyness, tho if you associate it with the rest...
  • my mom and dad both mentioned the fact it was really hard to make me eat anything new, and that if i was asked what i wanted to eat every day i would only eat alphabet pasta (exactly what it sounds like, pastas in the shape of letters)
  • when i got in ce2 (french equivalent of the american 3rd grade) my grandparents gifted me a dictionary, which i used to read like a book. as in i would open it to a random page and just read it
  • idk how it is in other countries, but in french grocery stores there's always a book section, at least in all the ones i've been in. when we went grocery shopping my mom used to let me stay in the book section and let me read there every. single. time.

and that's only what i remember! i'm sure there's more that i just either don't remember or that doesn't strike me as particularly odd

but yeah mother there was no possible sign that i might not be neurotypical, i was clearly the most neurotypical child ever /s

bonus : now she thinks she might have adhd which would track but at least that means she's more open to me thinking i'm autistic so that's a happy-ish ending
