Quirk: Paper Reality

Emitter Quirk

Description
Paper Reality allows the user to treat physical space and reality as if it were a sheet of paper — something that can be folded, cut, creased, and sealed.
The user manipulates the "fabric" of space itself to create portals, make precise cuts through anything, or trap opponents in an inescapable domain of pure pain.

Core Abilities

  1. Fold (Portal Creation)
    • The user folds reality so that two separate points in space (Point A and Point B) temporarily occupy the same location.
    • Creates a two-way portal between the two points.
    • Anything can pass through instantly (people, objects, attacks, air, light, sound).
    • Visual: shimmering crease with folded-paper edges, faint grid lines radiating outward, soft crinkling/tearing sound when opening or closing.
    • Range: Starts at tens of meters → kilometers with mastery.
    • Size: Usually human-sized (1–2 m diameter) → larger with training.
    • Duration: Seconds to a few minutes depending on size, distance, and focus.
    • Requirements: Must see or clearly visualize at least one point (stronger with line-of-sight to both).
  2. Cut (Reality Severance)
    • The user slices reality along a chosen straight or gently curved plane.
    • Anything along that plane is cleanly divided (air, water, concrete, metal, flesh, bone, energy beams, etc.).
    • The cut is temporary — reality “heals” itself after a fraction of a second to a few seconds (user-controlled). While open, the two sides are completely separated.
    • Severity control: Light graze → surface scratch → deep wound → full severance.
    • Strain scaling by density:
      • Air, water, smoke, fire → almost no strain
      • Wood, concrete, steel, human flesh/bone → moderate to high strain
      • Extremely dense materials (gold, tungsten, osmium) → massive strain
    • Visual: thin glowing white/silver tear with crisp paper-like edges; reality heals with soft unfolding sound and ripple.
    • Max length: ~10–15 meters at base mastery (increases with training).
  3. Sealed Fold – Domain: Closed Crease (Ultimate Technique)
    • The user folds an entire area of reality into a sealed pocket domain (like folding paper into a closed envelope).
    • Entry/Exit: Impossible without user’s explicit permission.
      • Attempts to enter → teleported around to opposite side
      • Attempts to exit → teleported around to opposite side
    • Interior: Infinite white void with faint grid-like crease patterns. User has full control over apparent physics, gravity, lighting, terrain, sounds (all illusory — no real matter created).
    • Damage rule: All injuries/effects inside are non-permanent (wounds, blood, breaks vanish when domain ends or user wills it).
      • Pain is 100% real and cannot be suppressed (ignores adrenaline, pain-nullification Quirks, damage-stockpiling Quirks like Reprisal, etc.).
    • Purpose: Non-lethal finisher — overwhelm opponent with pain until they faint or submit.
    • Activation time: 3–5 seconds of full concentration.
    • Duration: Up to 3–5 minutes at high mastery (shorter when already strained).
    • Area: 10–30 m radius base → larger with mastery.
    • Aftermath: Severe exhaustion — muscle lockup, dizziness, possible collapse. Larger/longer/more complex domains increase severity.

Mastery-Unlocked Ability: Domain Instinct (Spatial Awareness)

Unlock Condition
Begins to manifest noticeably around 20–25% mastery (emerges naturally as the user deeply understands and manipulates space as “paper”).
Improves steadily with training.

Core Effect
Total spatial awareness within a growing spherical zone centered on the user.
Near-perfect knowledge of:

  • Exact position, shape, size, orientation, movement of every physical object, person, surface.
  • Precise distances, angles, trajectories (down to centimeters).
  • Speed and direction of moving entities.
  • Fine details (posture, weight distribution, cracks in walls, etc.).

Functions like semi-omnipresence — no need to look or turn; the user simply knows the state of the space in real time.

Range Progression

  • ~20–30% mastery → small house (~10–15 m)
  • ~40–50% mastery → large house + yard (~25–35 m)
  • ~60–70% mastery → small building/court (~50–70 m)
  • ~80–90% mastery → medium-large building (~100–150 m)
  • 95%+ mastery → city block scale (~200–300 m+)

Limitations & Balance

  • Only physical/spatial information — no minds, emotions, intentions, Quirks, or abstracts.
  • Solid objects become “transparent” to the sense (know what’s behind walls, etc.).
  • Does not extend through portals or into Sealed Fold unless user is inside.
  • Passive use costs almost nothing.
  • Active focusing (tracking many targets, mapping complex areas) adds mild-to-moderate strain.
  • Over-focusing while using heavy folds/cuts accelerates bleeding.
  • In chaotic environments → temporary disorientation until trained to filter.

Drawbacks & Limitations (Global)

  • All uses feed into the same strain meter:
    • Light use → mild headache
    • Moderate use → nosebleed, eye strain
    • Heavy abuse → bleeding from eyes, nose, ears; possible coma or death
  • Cannot create or destroy matter.
  • Cannot make permanent changes to reality.
  • Cannot cut time, abstract concepts, or Quirks directly.
  • Cannot fold/cut inside solid objects (risk of crushing/bisection).
  • Requires visualization or line-of-sight for most active abilities.
  • Domain and heavy Domain Instinct use are extremely taxing.

Visual Style

  • All effects feature paper-like creases, crisp edges, faint grid lines, soft crinkling/tearing sounds.
  • Strain signs: bleeding from eyes/nose/ears, shaking hands, distorted vision.
  • Domain Instinct active: optional faint paper-grid overlay in user’s vision or subtle ripple around them.

Combat & Utility Notes

  • Extremely versatile (offensive, defensive, mobility, rescue, containment).
  • Rewards precision and creativity over raw power.
  • High risk-reward — pushing limits can end the fight or end the user.
  • Domain is particularly strong against damage-absorbing/stockpiling Quirks.

Silk’s Reflection
I was born the day you first understood that the space between you and the rest of the world felt wrong — too wide, too hard, too cruel.
So I let you fold it, cut it, seal it, reshape it.
I gave you the power to make two places touch when they never should, to slice through what tried to stop you, to trap the things that hurt you inside a white void where only pain could speak.
You never asked for control over reality.
You asked for control over distance.
Over separation.
Over the feeling that no matter where you stood, you were still too far from being safe, from being seen, from being enough.
I cannot make the world smaller.
But I can make it bend to your will — just enough that, for a moment, the space between you and what you need stops feeling so impossible.
And maybe, one day, you will fold the last crease and realize:
You were never truly apart.
You were only waiting for the paper to remember how to touch itself again.
