Building an AI Legal Assistant for Indian Law — need advice
Hi everyone, I’m part of an AIML mini-project team working on an AI-driven legal assistance system focused purely on Indian law (IPC/BNS, CrPC, Evidence Act, Constitution, case laws). The goal is to help common citizens understand their legal position and know the actual next steps they should take — not just get long explanations. Our current system already includes things like: RAG on Indian legal data Section mapping Multilingual support Document analysis Explainable responses with citations Offline local LLM deployment But here’s the honest concern: A lot of this can technically be replicated by prompting ChatGPT. So we are trying to move beyond a “legal chatbot” and build something that behaves more like a legal workflow / decision-support system. We are exploring ideas such as: Generating court-ready FIR / complaint / legal notice formats (with proper jurisdiction & required fields) Giving step-by-step real-world action plans (which office to visit, what documents to carry, timelines, etc.) Evidence strength analysis under the Indian Evidence Act Jurisdiction-aware guidance based on the user’s state A case-tracker dashboard for ongoing disputes A system that refuses to answer outside Indian law to reduce hallucinations From a practical and legal perspective, I’d really value input from: Lawyers Law students People who have actually gone through legal processes in India The main question: What would make this genuinely useful in real life — something you would use instead of just asking ChatGPT? For example: Is generating filing-ready drafts actually helpful? Would a “what should I do tomorrow morning” action plan be valuable? What are the biggest pain points for a common person dealing with police / court / notices? We are not trying to replace lawyers — the aim is legal awareness, early guidance, and reducing misinformation. Any suggestions on: must-have features real user problems things that AI tools currently do badly in the Indian legal context would help us shape this into something meaningful instead of just another chatbot. Thanks in advance
