Ender 3 auto level help

I bought an auto level for my ender 3 like a month ago and still for the life of me cant get it working correctly, I have leveled my bed manually with a bubble level and perform an auto home, then manually lower the z axis until it grabs a piece of paper which is usually at -1.0 but when I set that as my z offset the nozzle is floating way above the bed on a print, I've gotten my z axis all the way to -1.76 and thats still too high to print but -1.77 is too low and ruined 2 of my print beds im at a loss if anyone can help that would be great
