Hello,

I dabble with game dev and I just wanted to share a bit of insight.

I consider myself an absolute beginner in this, so please keep that in mind while reading.

Currently I'm working on my first "real" demo. For a game I want to actually make public and not bury it somewhere on my PC. (like some of my other projects ended up)

I have a day job and (like everyone else reading this) other real life commitments. (family, pets, health concerns, relationships etc) So progress is bumpy and very very very slow. I try to work at least an hour or so a night.

Last night I finished blocking out my level with rudimentary placeholders, I changed from the Brackeys Proto-Controller to a player capsule I made myself and added a tiny bit of lighting.

Now, all this "progress" was made in about 2-3 Weeks of on-off working, but last night it kinda "came together".

I know for an experienced dev this is probably a 2 hour work flow at most. But to me it felt legendary. Realistically speaking what I made was small and insignificant, yet I can't help but feel like I did ... good. :)

I keep thinking of the meme with the farmer "It ain't much. but it's honest work" and that's exactly how I felt last night.

It's not much, it's not impressive, hell, It's not even good, but it's there, it exists and I can't wait to make it pretty.

Next goal: make the enemy placeholders follow the player

I try to keep it simple, so I don't get overwhelmed. Also there's a pic. Writing this from my phone, so I don't have any other progress pics rn. Sorry.

I hope with this post I can somehow spark discussion between new and experienced devs. And maybe nostalgia for the more experienced ones or even relatability for the new ones. Thank you for your attention \^\^

TLDR: I made ugly blocks move and that gave me a dopamine rush.

In the beginning small progress feels legendarily big
