My sister's going through hell (Emotional Abuse)
Disclaimer: This is a long read. We're all over 18. Based in a third-world country. I'm typing this in a rush as I'm at work, so pardon any inconsistencies. This is on a new account as I don't intend on keeping it for long.
As the title says, my sister has been going through hell and back because of her boyfriend, and she just can't seem to leave him.
For some background info:
They met July last year, and started dating in August or so. She dropped the job she had going for her, moved in with him in December of 2025, about 6 hours away from home. He still lives with his parents. He promised her a job that would pay $500 per month (which is very, very livable for us, especially for a student)
This is 2x more than she was earning from her job here at home, though now it doesn't count toward experience for her degree.
A bit about him:
He's a self-centered, narcissistic, lazy, "all about me" type of person.
He hates anyone else's pets, because "it's not his". He only talks about everything they own, as if he bought it all, meanwhile he works for his parents.
As with most abusers, he was charming at first (though I must admit I was very skeptical at first, clearly my gut feeling was right). Though, that month of them living together was incredibly chaotic, so much so that she asked us to pick her up. At the door, he told my dad that "nothing was wrong, they're doing fine."
She stayed with us for the month of January and moved back, with him promising to buy her a flight ticket to come back down on the 20th of February for her birthday (which he then took back, expecting us to pay for the flight he booked for her to go back!)
For the whole of February she's been calling us daily; her telling my parents about all the awful things he's been doing. To name a few incidents:
- Every day, he's expected her to make him breakfast, clean up the bedroom, wash his clothes, etc., while doing absolute nothing in return, being a lazy POS;
- After a disagreement, after she went and got something from his car, she put the car keys down a little too hard for his liking, so he threw her phone and glasses on the floor;
- He's been blaming her for everything going wrong in their relationship;
- He's been calling her "fucking crazy" and "fucked in the head";
- He's been causing her to cry consistently, and even told her to "go cry somewhere else and go sleep on the couch";
- Financially abusive, as she works for the family and hasn't been paid yet - pay even got reduced from $500 to $377?
- He's stated how much he hates my mom, how we're brainwashing her, talking things into her head about him being bad and abusive;
- If she'd ask for something like a glass of water, or to fetch something close-by, he'd say she must "do it herself", but loses her shit if she does the same;
- After getting food delivered to her, strictly FOR her, he ate some of the food and the chocolate bar, refusing to replace it, even after direct instruction from MY parents;
- Hitting up another girl, so much so that she's ended her ongoing engagement, presumably for him;
- Controls her lifestyle, so much so that she can't vape (after already doing it before they even met) - he told her "I don't want you close to me" after seeing her vape in OUR house on her birthday (more on this later);
- Told her to "fuck off back to [our town]", multiple times
His parents haven't been cooking for her; she's vegetarian, they aren't. And had to plead her boyfriend to buy her something to eat for lunch, being 3 samosas. For dinner she has a peach and coffee. As previously mentioned, after ordering her a grocery pack, he decided its fine to eat 4 of the 24 sausages we got her and a chocolate bar, after she explicitly told the entire family to NOT touch it. As far as I know, he's not intending on replacing it.
NOW, her birthday:
It was such a mission to even get her here. The original agreement, was that he would pay for her flight ticket back to our town for her birthday, if she could convince my parents to let her go sooner (end of January). He has since backtracked on his word, now claiming my parents owed him the money for the flight ticket he got for her to go back to his town.
After a bunch of excuses like "your parents owe me money!" and "well, if they don't pay me, we are both not going" and "why does it have to be there? why can't they come and do something here?", he insisted we pay half of the fuel fair, which we reluctantly obliged with. He told my sister, "How I treat your mother is dependent on how she treats me".
He also "had to" attend some non-important event at his local sports club, so he left Thursday afternoon (19 Feb), stayed on Friday (20 Feb), and left again on Saturday at 4AM (21 Feb) so he can attend the event. Selfish!
He did stay with us free of charge, shamelessly showing his face, somehow. However, he wouldn't try talking to us, so he stayed in my sister's bedroom, expecting her to bring him food and drinks as he would just lay down and doomscroll on his phone.
The entire time during her birthday, at the high tea venue, he was extremely bitter. Not talking to anyone in the family, not talking to my sister. The only thing I can remember him talking about is some house his family had bought, where the slums are, and how the people in the slums are being mistreated (like it's a good thing??)
At the end of the day, he didn't greet my grandparents at all; I think he expected them to go to him, and not him needing to go to them.
I think I've said enough about him.
Now, my sister:
Every time something bad happens, and she calls us, and we tell her that he quite simply doesn't care for her, and he has no right to do all of that to her, and that she deserves better, she (classically) clings on to every single time he was nice. She even said "but Tuesday morning was alright!" as an excuse to us telling her he's horrible.
She keeps making excuses for his behaviour; sort of giving herself reason to stay. Trying to convince us that she's fine to stay there, despite all the things going down.
It's like she thrives off of the drama.
Domestic Violence is a crime, and I know where they live. I want to call the police straight to their doorstep. But I know she'll hate me for it, and I feel she somehow needs to get out of the trouble herself, we can't force her.
She clings on every little piece of niceness he provides, once in a blue moon.
On New Years, he didn't give her a hug or a kiss. He was angry at her for some reason.
At first, he told her that she isn't getting anything for her birthday, because she "doesn't deserve it"
One of the friends she's made there even told her that he's known for cheating on his girlfriends.
My sister even called his ex, which he claimed was batshit crazy, and she also said that he's extremely controlling, and his mother thinks of him as a little innocent puppy that can't do anything wrong.
I got wind of some story that my sister is afraid of not finding love, and not getting a partner to marry one day. She is literally freshly 21 years old. I don't know how that's a concern for her already if she's still studying. It's like she has a chronic fear of being single.
I intend on showing her this entire thread.
Advice for both her and for me would be highly appreciated.
TL;DR: My sister is with a very abusive, manipulative boyfriend 6 hours away, that cheats on her, belittles her, emotionally and financially abuses her. She can't seem to let him go and just puts up with his shit, and I feel terrible for not helping her in some way. She doesn't seem like she wants to get help either.
While I don't tell her or often show that I love her, I'm deeply concerned, and want to stop this disgrace of what is supposedly a man to never touch a woman ever again.
