EV Novated Leasing and Childcare Subsidy Demystified
Most people know you could save tax via novated leasing, and in many cases even after fees and interests you may potentially come out ahead compared to purchase through cash or standard loan.
But have you ever received your higher childcare subsidy bill or HECS repayment after your EV novated lease and thought "Hang on, no one told me anything about this!"?
If that happened to you, you have just met one of the most important caveats of novated leasing.
To be fair, leasing companies do mention it. But they usually do so in fine print and in language like:
- "EV novated leasing may generate reportable fringe benefit with downstream impact"
- "Consult your tax professional for description of how your adjusted taxable income might be affected".
Which is technically correct and forms a degree of "disclosure", but not exactly illuminating.
---
What is actually happening:
When you take an EV under FBT-exempt novated lease:
Your taxable income goes down (because lease payments are pre-tax hence reduce your gross taxable income).
But a Reportable Fringe Benefit Amount (RFBA) is calculated.
That RFBA is added back to calculate your Adjusted Taxable Income (ATI).
And ATI is what’s used to assess:
- HECS/HELP repayment
- Childcare subsidy
- Division 293 tax
- Child support
- Medicare levy surcharge, etc.
---
Example (simplified)
Let’s use a common scenario:
• EV dutiable value: ~$75,500
• Income: $100,000
• Lease payment: ~$19,100 per year
After novated lease:
• Taxable income drops to ~$80,900
• RFBA ≈ ~$28,500
• Adjusted Taxable Income becomes ~$109,400
So yes, your income tax drops. But your ATI is now higher than before the lease. That’s why HECS or childcare can increase.
---
NL Calculator Shows This Clearly
One of the key features in novatedlease.guide calculator is that it calculates:
- Post-NL taxable income
- RFBA
- Adjusted taxable income
These formulas are not secret. They are published and mechanically defined. They are perfectly calculable.
Many NL providers and even online comments avoid this because “we can’t give financial advice.” However this isn’t advice; it's basic arithmetic using publicly known formula.
While I don’t directly calculate your childcare subsidy (because that system is insanely complex), I link to external tools so you can plug in your updated ATI and see the downstream impact.

Hopefully this demystifies the common "what happens to my childcare subsidy" questions we see online, and stop this from becoming yet another "gotcha" of novated leasing.
