Don’t know where to turn politically
In light of the recent revelations about the spate of gay bashings perpetrated by Islamic extremists in Australia, I feel at a loss politically speaking. I lean left economically. For instance, I strongly believe in public education and healthcare. But I care about my safety even more. When I look at the Australian left wing parties - the Greens and to a lesser extent Labor - it’s clear that they, in their desperation to avoid being labelled as racist, will not call out and address the issue of Islamic intolerance of homosexuality. Meanwhile, the right wing parties - especially One Nation and to a lesser extent the Liberals/Nationals - openly oppose Islam, but only because of its (often minor) differences to their own strongly conservative Christian beliefs, not because they care about the gays. Not to mention that these parties’ right wing economic policies are highly unpalatable. Sometimes it feels like there is not one party in this country that actually cares about my safety or reflects my views. Does anyone else feel the same?
