Why do Americans use plastic plates/cutlery?

Why is it so common to use plastic or styrofoam plates and cutlery? It’s so wasteful and the extreme consumerism is driving me insane. I see it so much in programmes I watch, or TikTok’s, instagram, Reddit etc. Why is washing up and reusing not more common?
