Preschool giving toddlers toxic(potentially fatal) plant to paint with
Hi! I need help!
A local preschool posted a picture of maybe 3 year olds painting with pokeweed. The plant can commonly cause a lot vomiting, cramping, diarrhea, and in very serious cases can cause death. I am also finding research of it causing cancer and tumors and birth defects. The berries, stems, roots and leaves are all toxic, even touching the plant can hurt people.
I contacted the preschool director, they say they are safe and have a well thought out curriculum, but they will change the way they post on social media. They implied that they are transparent with parents, but I’m wondering how many parents know about this plant? They probably trust the teachers to know these things. The director saysI didn’t have context. The children have no gloves, no eye protection and someone is touching the plant directly in one photo. The kids are smashing the berries with hammers, and of course there is evidence of the berries juice spattering all over the table.
They completely disregarded what my email was about, which was urging them to alert the families and taking safety courses. I don’t have a kid in this school, but I do have kids of the same age. I have contacted the group that certifies them and their membership groups. They’re a nature school. Do I contact board of education? How far do I take this? If the director had shown me accountability, I would have left it there, but she seems to think she’s in the right.
I don’t want to post pictures because they have kids in them
