Petition to Stop Belittling Agriculture Students: We Are Scientists, Not Just "Glorified Gardeners"

Why is it that whenever someone in the Philippines hears "Agriculture student," the first thing they think is that you’re just a glorified gardener or someone who couldn't get into a "proper" science course? It’s time to address the blatant belittling and lack of respect for Agri students in this country.

People act like all we do is hold shovels and plant seedlings under the sun. They don’t realize that Agriculture is a massive, complex field. We study soil science, animal genetics, biochemistry, and advanced agri-technology. It’s incredibly frustrating when you’re neck-deep in studying cell structures or genomic mapping, and people just say, "Oh, so magsasaka lang pala?" as if being a farmer is a lesser path, or as if the degree requires zero intelligence.

The truth is, many parents and even some educators steer their brightest kids away from Agri because it’s not seen as "prestigious" like Engineering, Medicine, or Law. They see it as a vocation, not a profession. This mindset is so backward, especially for an agricultural nation like ours. We should be celebrating the people who will literally feed the country, not looking down on them. We are not "just" farming. Agri students are the future of food security. Agri students are the ones who will develop sustainable systems, create resilient crop varieties, and manage complex food supply chains. Agri students deserve to be treated with the same intellectual respect as any other STEM major.

Stop underestimating Agri degrees and the intelligence of the students who choose them. We aren't just "planting rice" we are solving the hunger crisis.
