Moneyweb understates Sygnia’s fees in a comparison (even though they knew better). Here is the real data
In a Moneyweb article published on 11 February 2025 titled "Satrix and Sygnia tracker fund fees compared", the publication incorrectly states that:
"As with Sygnia, Satrix does not charge a platform fee for investing in unit trusts on SatrixNOW."
This statement was factually misleading at the time of publication and remains misleading today
The purpose of the article was to report on "the decision by Sygnia to introduce an annual administration fee for using its Sygnia Alchemy direct investment platform". Yet, the publication included a fee table that completely ignored this new fee, reflecting only the internal fund costs (TIC) rather than the actual Effective Annual Cost (EAC) to the investor.
They recently (February 2026) updated the article to add a disclaimer stating that the fee table provided is "as at the 11th of February" and are of the opinion that the table is “correct” based on the data at that specific moment.
However, the impending fee impact was already well known to Moneyweb. A full month earlier, on 10 January 2025, they published an article titled "After 11 years, Sygnia to introduce admin fees on its funds", in which they explicitly stated:
"Sygnia will introduce an administration fee from 9 April 2025 on all of its own unit trusts"
Despite knowing this, they published a comparison a month later claiming Sygnia had "0% platform fees" without adjusting their data to reflect the reality facing investors.
They have still not updated the significant error in the data table. Below is the Corrected Table showing the actual cost to an investor today.
Corrected Fee Table: Sygnia Funds (Amounts < R2m)
| Fund Name | Fee Stated by Moneyweb (TIC Only) | Actual Total Cost (TIC + 0.40% Admin) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sygnia Top 40 Index Fund | 0.62% | 1.01% | 65% Increase |
| Sygnia Money Market Fund | 0.31% | 0.71% | 129% Increase |
| Sygnia Skeleton Balanced Absolute Fund | 0.57% | 0.99% | 74% Increase |
