Why could my plumber use a plunger on my kitchen sink?

The plumber had to come unclog my kitchen sink, and I was surprised that he could plunge it clear. It seems to me that, given my sink has two drains leading to the same pipe, that you can't get pressure, since the other drain is open. Yet it worked! So I'm puzzled why.
