Especially during "The Surge", would today's social media be absolutely ruthless and mean?

I'm smart enough to stay out of politics and foreign affairs on public social media for obvious reasons, but if the recent ICE drama means anything, then the fed gov is going to be in for a bad time, publicity wise, when the Iran campaign kicks off.
