[2 YoE] What do software engineers actually want in a resume editor software? (no promotion)
In the past 6 months, after I failed a system design interview for a senior document-editor role at Google, I decided to build a prototype to level up, inspired by PandaDoc-style editor and built it by reverse-engineering the behavior from what I could observe in the HTML.
While building it, I realized the same editor could solve a real problem job seekers face every day (including me): most resume builders lock you into templates and make tailoring painfully slow.
What I’m building (MVP):
- Live editor with drag & drop sections (reorder instantly)
- Mix & match section templates (Education, Experience, Skills, Projects,...)
- Real styling controls: spacing, padding/margins, borders, colors
- Custom templates with full layout control
- Clean PDF export with ATS-friendly structure
- Chrome extension (Select your resume to help you apply faster)
Planned next (roadmap):
- ATS best-practice checks per section (clarity/keyword guidance)
- Job variants/branches (Like git) (multiple versions for different roles without duplicating all in the same resume editor)
- Sharing + comments (private/public link for review)
- AI assistance (suggestions + resume/cover-letter/resignation letter generation)
- Job Tracker
I’m building this primarily for software engineers and I’d love your opinion: what should I add next, what do you think of the ideas so far, and what would you personally want to see in a resume editor SaaS?
