Warning: Heavy spoilers for the entire game. I recommend only reading this if you've finished everything.
(EDIT 2: reposting with vaguer title because previous post was taken down. also added some info about the red letter in the ||study||)
(EDIT: added images of some pages from the red letters)
Red letter 1 has different text alignment
Red letter 4 has italicized and regular text
Red letter 5 has different text alignment
Red letter 6 ends a page abruptly
Red letter 8 ends a page abruptly
"Finished" this game recently with a group of friends and there is still something bugging me regarding the red letters that Simon has found.
Has anyone noticed that some red letters>!have pages that seem to be forgeries because they are unlike the other pages of the same letter!<?
Most noticeable in these letters:
- RL1 >!(underpass, from Worth Laude to Herbert Sinclair) : Page 1 has justified handwriting while the other pages are left-aligned handwriting!<.
- RL4 >!(boudoir, from Daniel Jones to Herbert Sinclair): Page 1&2 have italicized handwriting while page 3 has non-italicized handwriting!<.
- RL6 >!(drawing room, from Herbert to Mary): Page 2 ends at an awkward point in the middle of a sentence despite there being more space left on the page!<.
- RL8 >!(office, from blackmailer to Herbert Sinclair): Page 2 ends at an awkward point in the middle of a sentence as well!<.
- RL5 (unsure)>!(drafting studio, from Mary to Herbert): Page 2 has different text alignment than page 1, but it could be just the sign-off text that is different which wouldn't be unusual!<.
My theory is:
These letters were originally blackmail-worthy because they were written records of not just Herbert's involvement in the heist but also because every letter was correspondence between parties who support Orinda. Herbert has changed some of the contents of these letters after the blackmailing incident with>!Denny Revane!<and before placing them in the safes for Simon to find. The gist of the letters are mostly the same but Herbert has carefully replaced some pages with the following goals in mind:
- Obscure the location that Mary fled to after the heist
- Lessen the treasonous thoughts expressed by some of the letter correspondents who still live in Fenn and may suffer consequences if this news got out. Notably, coded support for Orinda (mentions of the colour black) was allowed to remain and may be the best indicator for which portions of the letters are real VS forged
- And strangely, injecting more references to Simon into these letters. I have another theory as to why this is, but it's a big stretch so I won't go into it here
With the above in mind I am guessing that these are the forged portions of each letter:
- RL1 >!Pages 2&3 have a dramatic tonal shift and were faked to make Worth Laude seem like he is an opportunist who is mailing Herbert to blackmail him. My guess is that he originally wrote the letter to express that the two of them shared similar views, especially since he referenced his father resting in "soot and ash" (black). Similarly Denny's handwritten note was included to support the above narrative. Otherwise it's quite strange for Denny to write a blackmail letter with his own hadnwriting, when he went to great lengths to hide that previously (the newspaper collage letter in 46th room's drawer and the typewritten letter in the office)!<.
- RL2 >!Page 2 has Caleb using the wrong kind of sign-off with "shore of white sands" rather than the colour black. Although at first glance it could seem like it's refering to the white sands of the safehouse shores, that is a detail that Caleb is unlikely to know at the time of letter writing. He wrote this letter (Dec 8) before Mary arrived at the estate to join them, but we know from Shelter email logs that it was after Mary arrived and corresponded with Randolph about how cramped it was that Herbert dug out the pump room blueprint to open the path to the safehouse for them (Feb 25). This second page also provides an alibi for the servant staff of Mt. Holly in the matter of the heist preparations, but we know from Admin Logs that at least Randolph was heavily involved!<.
- RL3 >!Nonexistent letter!<.
- RL4 >!Since the earlier pages have a mention of Mary "riding into the darkness of a hundred nights" I think that the non-italicized page 3 is the forgery. It is also the only page that mentions the writer's relationship to Mary and mentions Simon. Perhaps Daniel Jones did not write this letter, or Simon was not Herbert's heir at the time this letter was written?!<.
- RL5 >!Page 1 could be a forgery because it specifically mentions the direction Mary will flee (north, by rail), and also the special message in the safehouse that is "for Simon". I don't think Mary wrote the letter in the safehouse for Simon, and while the message on the wall is likely for Simon, I don't think that was prepared by Mary even though it's written in her handwriting!<.
- RL6 >!Page 2 with the suspicious line break is the forgery, but this letter overall is a tricky one. This forged page suggests Mary fled east and that she planned to reunite with Simon, both things that are not substatiated elsewhere. It also suggests that Herbert doesn't think he will meet Mary again after she leaves, which contradicts the more hopeful letter sign-off on the last page. To me this aligns with this forged page being written by an older and wearier Herbert who knows he will die soon. I suspect this is the only red letter that originally mentioned Simon. It also seems to suggest that tragic events occurred in Mary's life in 1986, which stuck out to me as strange!<.
- RL7 >!Page 2 is likely the forgery, since it uses the term "black water insurgents" which suggests an unflattering view of Orindian sympathizers and is a term that we've only seen the Fenn media use in newspaper clippings, and also says Mary fled southwards by sea. In contrast, page 3 uses "strangling crimson curtains" to allude to a different political affiliation!<.
- RL8 >!Page 2 with the suspicious line break is the forgery. It contains a mention of threatening Herbert's nephew (Simon) that seems a little forced and not corroborated anywhere else in the game. I am not sure what the original letter contained, but my guess would be that the blackmailer revealed the reason for the blackmail in more explicit terms (the letters being incriminating evidence for treason by Herbert and family/friends/staff)!<.
I'd love to hear if anyone has noticed other inconsistencies or suspicious points in the letters, or if there are any flaws in this theory that stick out to you. I'm also happy to share my wilder theories that build on top of this one, if people are interested.
