Can I start playing this game now?

I've never played Smite before. Yesterday I decided to play my first game, and I'm 99% sure that everyone but one player in my games were bots, as was the tutorial content (especially in my native language). But I heard that this game even has some kind of eSports, so I'm confused. Maybe all the players are old-school and I just need to get to the high ranks?
