But time is their beast. Time is my beast. It bites us differently
I really try not to dislike this show, but there are numerous issues.
First, the Doctor’s voice is nearly unrecognizable in the opening scene and throughout the episode. The line, “But time is their beast. Time is my beast. It bites us differently,” feels like pure Kurtzman faux-Shakespeare—dramatic cadence overshadowing actual meaning.
Additionally, Tilly, the science officer from Discovery, is suddenly teaching theater and knows how to help students resolve their trauma? Honestly, I’d prefer not to be reminded of Discovery while I’m trying to enjoy this.
Another line that stands out is, “It's the kind of stuff you overachievers get all hot and bothered over.” This feels completely out of place—wrong tone, wrong moment, and wrong character.
Then there’s Sam's line: “Slow to impulse. I'm not even up yet, and I just can't with your midday energy before I even pull my underwear out of my butt.” Underwear? She’s a hologram. Do the writers remember that, or did someone forget which characters are corporeal this week?
And more drinking, more use of “asshole.” It’s exhausting.
The term “quadri-testicles” is so absurd that it shatters any serious tone they may be trying to achieve.
As for Tarima, the acting seems to become flatter with each episode.
The Doctor mentions, "Voyager encountered a similar planet, except with a tachyon core—Gotana. I experienced an entire lifetime there in what was 18 minutes for the ship." That’s such a wonderful episode of TV. I would trade this entire show for just one more episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
And then we have “Tears of Kressari.” More drinking. Always drinking. We never overcame this in the future. Plus - the "touch my mouth" lines were baffling.
SO SLOW MOVING. Unearned emotional moments.
I will give the show credit -
I like the idea of the doctor resolving some of the family issues from "Real Life". That seems like it would be a deep cut for some viewers.
The Our Town tie in was interesting.
