[Waybound] Going through the series once again, Cassius is completely wrong.
On my bi-yearly re-listening to the audiobooks, I'm currently on Underlord and got to the section where Cassius confronts Eithan about taking everything on faith. He comes in very hostile and nearly drawing his blade to attack Eithan for the audacity of not talking to the branch heads that voted him out?
Mind you, they voted him out because he wanted the family to go help others affected by the bleeding phoenix while Cassius wanted the family to go and hide even if it upset the emperor. Then Cassius tattled to the branch heads about the plan, but stands by the technicality that "he" didn't vote Eithan out of power, it was the branch heads.
His complaint about having to take everything on faith is also hollow when thought about for more than a second. Eithan single handedly brings down the Jai clan and it's Underlord. Making way for the Arelius clan to take their place as one of the great families. Even the emperor knows they will, but thats not enough "proof" for Cassius. Even before his meltdown to Eithan he comments on Lindon and Yerin's growth to true golds, proof right in front of him what Eithan can do with talented individuals. Hell, he met Lindon as a fresh iron and saw Eithan bring him up to low gold in a single year. Literally watching his progress from a secret mountain base only Eithan knew about and showed him.
Cassius even admits that he assumed A) Eithan already knew about the upcoming Uncrowned King Tournament. And B) has candidates already picked out. If he can already figure out what Eithan has planned, is it really taking things on faith? Or is he just upset that he wasn't consulted in the planning of what obviously should be done?
I think it boils down to Cassius wanting Eithan to do nothing but produce underlord scales and abide by what his dad has planned. That's basically what he said in Skysworn, that Eithan was wasting resources on Lindon and Yerin when he could be making pure madra scales instead.
