Afraid of “fixing” the wrong problem in this story
I’ve gotten feedback (mostly from non-writer friends and family) that the ending of this story could be misread as a “gotcha” moment, even though it’s meant to land as empathy and emotional collapse.
Now I’m second-guessing whether I should add something early on to prevent that reading, but I’m worried it would shift the film away from what it’s actually about.
My gut says to shoot it as written and hold onto the tenderness that’s already there. I’m directing it myself in two months.
Trying not to summarize the film here, so apologies if this is hard to discuss in the abstract. I’ve attached the 14-page script in case anyone’s open to reading and sharing thoughts.
