Tori and criticism
What do people make of the surge in criticism towards Tori recently?
I understand where it comes from: a place of care for Tori, a respect for her catalogue and craft, high expectations. Yet I feel sometimes that recent criticism overshadows these concerns, and are more directed at expecting Tori to still be exorcising the same demons from her youth with the same flexibility and consciousness.
In Times of Dragons seems to be exactly what fans have been expecting from Tori for a while now, and does seem to be the most inspired and assured she’s been in a project in a while. Criticism can be really fruitful and substantial in discourse on someone as brilliant as Tori and her discography, but like I said, I feel sometimes that people are too comfortable approaching her new work from places of cynicism rather than meeting her where she is.
I don’t mean to offend anyone at all, but I’m really curious as to what people make of this as it’s such a hot topic currently!
