Rakul, twenty-five, stood trapped in a gilded cage of her father’s making. Three months ago, Vikram, a fifty-seven-year-old financier with a cold smile, had cleared the family’s crushing debt. The terms were unspoken but understood: her presence, her deference, belonged to him now. Clad in a sky-blue chiffon saree with a silver zari border, her anxiety was accentuated by the punishing weight of her temple-style gold earrings. Their elaborate design ended in thick, coin-like pendants that pulled incessantly at her large, stretched earlobes, making her slightly protruding ears feel raw and exposed before Vikram even spoke from his booth.

His hand moved with cold purpose. His thumb and forefinger closed not on the jewellery, but on the tender, vulnerable flesh of her earlobe itself, pinching the stretched skin and the cold metal backing of the earring together. He gave a sharp, sustained pull. A lance of fire shot through her head. The heavy pendant swung brutally, tearing at the cartilage. Humiliation burned hotter than the pain as her lobe flared a deep, mortifying red under his grip. He held it, his dominance absolute in that silent, painful stretch, before releasing. The earring swayed like a gong after a strike, the throbbing redness a branded testament to his control. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
