38, burnt out and no clear path ahead
like the title says, I'm pretty adrift right now and have absolutely no idea which way the proverbial shore is.
Nutshell version, I'm working a full time job that pays absolutely excellently. I am making solid survivability money, it pays my rent and my bills, I have savings, I can afford to eat more than rice and beans and occasionally throw $20 at a video game or book on sale. I'm not wealthy by any means, but I am just shy of what I would consider comfortable.
The problem is, it's an absolutely awful job for me. I'm neurodivergent in a team of neurotypicals who've made it quite clear that I'm not part of the cool kids club. I'm excluded from a lot of projects and opportunities for development in general. I make no illusions that I'm not also probably part of the problem here, but I have spent so long masking in this team trying everything I can to make nice and get in good that I've burnt out completely. It takes every ounce of my mental energy (and a solid amount of my physical) just to get through my basic work tasks most days.
It's a soft skills role, and I have no qualifications or technical expertise that would allow me to transition out without taking a significant pay cut. like, a little over 20% pre tax type of pay cut. My country is deep in the throes of a housing crisis, and I'm splitting rent with two other people to keep a secure roof. It's not even a good roof, we've been fighting for almost 3 years to get basic maintenance done that still hasn't happened. As things stand, I cannot afford to take that kind of pay cut to get out of this job.
Living with housemates isn't the greatest either. One is my brother who has managed to significantly improve his hygiene, but for the most part I feel trapped in a situation where I'm having to parents grown adults on how to handle basic life skills. Everything is always filthy and cluttered and I spend so much of my down time picking up after people. But again, can't afford to leave.
This is not how I expected to be headed into my 40s. I don't even know what direction I want to head in any more I just know it isn't this one. I started preparing to go back to university and get a degree for a career pivot, but then I'm doubting if the ROI would even be worth it or would I end up in another job I hate - or worse - with no job prospects at all. Physical disability means I can't go off and learn a trade and the longer I sit in this situation the more I lose any kind of passion for things I used to enjoy.
Rationally I know there has to be a way out here, but I have no idea where to start looking.
