Tongyeong ferry report
Hi all. I was thinking to leave a short summary of my ferry adventure from Tongyeong here, as there were a few things I haven't been aware of. I thought it might help a few people. I took a day trip with the ferry to Bijindo Island, but I am sure the procedure applies more or less to other islands as well.
- Buying tickets First of all, ticket sales begins in the ferry terminal one hour before the departure of the ferry. For the timetable of the ferries, go to the ferry terminal the day before, ask your hotel or check Naver, they also seem to have certain ferry times. Buying itself requires your passport and was a bit of a hassle, as the staff didn't speak English. They will also ask you if you have a roaming sim and will ask you to call a local Korean number. If you are not able to call their number, and they check this on the spot, you will not get your ticket.
- Boarding and ferry ride Boarding started in my case 10 mins before departure. It's a nice ferry with toilets, wifi and places to sit, lie and charge your phone.
- Return In my case the return ferry arrived pretty much on time. I read from others that ferries can also leave earlier though. So better be back a bit too early than too late.
- Additonal Bring enough food and drinks. At least Bijindo Island didn't have any shops and only one restaurant open (in February). Most Koreans will bring all their food. There are toilets though close to the ferry dock.
